Bro there is no way they are serving that time. I just got clean a little under 6 months ago after 5 years of use. It was a miracle and I honestly don’t know one single other person that I knew in that life that also made it out… I was on the streets of Tenderloin San Francisco and knew people who would regularly be arrested for $10,000s to $100,000s of dollars in fent on them over and over again. The police would watch them count their money and serve a 1,000 people back to back in front of fed buildings… They would go to jail for a couple days to a week tops and be released right back onto the streets to keep doing the same thing until eventually someone else would take over. Often they got shot and killed by rivals. You usually didn’t see the same people for too long but not because they’d go to prison… Sometimes they’d get deported, sometimes they’d provide enough for their family back home to live decent enough and go back to their wives, kids, parents. Too often they’d meet their end to assault machine gun fire. I’ve been there and witnessed all of the above but almost never did they go to prison and never were they forcing anyone to do anything. People feel like they’re going to die if they don’t get their fix - that’s how unfathomably agonizing the withdrawals are and these guys that are providing it are seen as damn near saviors and heroes when they’re the only thing keeping you such unbearable agony that you’d rather die than experience it. Majority of the guys out there were from Honduras and they were very kind people just trying to feed their kids… Most of them even took kids clothes as payment. Unfortunately very tragic situations for everyone involved. The addicts writhing in agony without their fix so they keep taking a substance that is killing them to feel half way okay putting their lives on the line every day. And the guys that distribute it who are mostly just trying to survive brutal circumstances and mostly trying to provide for their families and make sure their kids have food and clothes and a place to live (also putting their lives on the line every day) who often have to end up killing each other because it seems like that’s the only way they can keep providing for their families. They were always very kind to me and everyone they dealt with but if you were an opposing gang/cartel member they wouldn’t hesitate to show you zero mercy because they know that person wouldn’t show them any.
